WHAT ARE WE CURRENTLY STUDYING IN OUR CLASSES?
SOCIAL STUDIES - We are covering Goal 1: Life in the region prior to the Revolutionary War, and have
started with a study of basic NC geography. Our first test was given on Wednesday, 13 August and
covered Chapter One - Terms and Places. We are now working on Chapter 2 - the arrival of the Native
Americans, post-European contact Native groups, and the Columbian Exchange next week.
MATH - We have learned how to solve one and two step equations, calculated problems using integers,
learned how to combine like terms and solved problems using the Distributive Property. Students
have learned a song, solved problems on the board, learned how to make flip cards for vocabulary,
worked in groups and played around the world with integers. They have taken 2 quizzes and their
first maintenance was due on August 11th(Monday). The first test of the marking period will be next
week. I will be available for extra help on Tuesday, August 12th from 3:15-4:15 and during lunch on
Wednesday. Students should refer to the side board for after school and lunch availability.
ALGEBRA - Students have learned 11 mathematical properities, justified their steps within a
mathematical equation, learned how to classify real numbers, solved inequalities, solved matrices
and used the order of operations to solve equations. We made a real number "island," played a game
with real numbers, played tic-tac-tow with the distributive property/combining like
terms(congratulations x's), solved problems on the board and wrote expressions using cut-outs. The
students have taken 2 quizzes and their first maintenance was due on Monday, August 11th. Their
first test will be Tuesday, August 12th. I will be available for extra help on Tuesday, August 12th
from 3:15-4:15 and during lunch on Tuesday. Students should refer to the side board for after
school and lunch availability.
MATH & ALGEBRA - As you can see, we have been quite busy. The students have done a great job
completing their classwork and homework, which has helped them retain the material that they have
learned in class. Thank you for your continued support with nightly homework assignments. Prior to
each test, students will receive a study guide with information that they should know for the
upcoming assessment. Please take a minute to review these concepts with your child. A great way to
help your child study is to have them write an example problem for each concept and have them teach
you how to solve it. This will be a great motivation for them to fully concentrate in class so that
they can teach their parent what they have learned.
SCIENCE - Science education began with a review of safety and equipment concluding with a safety
test. The second unit concludes 15 August. Scientific method and measurement were explored through
several activities and experiments. The study of matter including physical and chemical
characteristics and changes will begin our study of chemistry. Chemistry will be studied throughout
the first quarter. Elements, atomic, and molecular structure, solutions and chemical reactions will
be included in the chemistry units.
Students maintain a Science notebook to ensure organization and learning. The notebook contains
all of their work and a grade sheet which is a continuous record of their progress. Daily study and
review will result in a successful year of Science.
LANGUAGE ARTS - We will be covering all types of genres, drama, poetry, grammar, vocabulary,
writings, etc. Detailed information regarding Language Arts can be found on Ms. Kithcart's
Schoolnotes webpage: http://www.schoolnotes.com/27587/shaunkithcart.html
We look forward to working with you this school year to help your student achieve academic success.
Please plan to attend the Open House on Thursday, 4 September.

Welcome to 8th grade!
Open House - Thursday, 4 September 2008 - 6:30-8:00. The PTA meeting will be held from 6:30-6:40.
If you would like to volunteer for events that take place - field trips, dance chaperone, etc.
please visit the Media Center from 5:30-6:30 to complete the "Volunteer Registration" process.
Parents, please make sure you take time to go through your child's spring and summer clothes with
him or her very soon. As you know, middle school students grow very quickly and some of the clothes
that met dress code standards last school year don't quite do so now. We will take time to review
expectations with the students during the first week of school, as well.
As a brief reminder:
Girls: Skirts and shorts must be as long as the middle finger when the hand is held down by the
side (shoulders relaxed). Shirts should not have spaghetti straps or any type of strap that is
narrower than three fingers held together. Sundresses or shirts or dresses with a partial back are
also prohibited. Dresses and shirts/blouses should not expose cleavage or the midriff (stomach).
Boys: No tank tops or sagging pants. Loose fitting pants should be worn with a belt at all times to
prevent sagging.
Students who are not dressed appropriately for the school day will be asked to change their
clothing. Clothing that causes a disturbance is an issue we would like to avoid this school year.
Students - if you have a doubt about whether it is appropriate, please don't wear it to school.
