Early Childhood Education I #7111 Syllabus

Teacher:	Mrs. Jan Smith, Room 108

General Description:

This course is designed to help prepare students for a career in
childcare. It teaches practical ways to guide children through a variety of
daily experiences in safe, educational ways. Students will be taught skills
relevant for success in working with children. Courses include an overview
of the physical, intellectual, social and emotional characteristics of young
children. Students will utilize writing, guidance, curriculum,
craft/creational, professional, computer and communication skills.

This program provides an internship experience where the student will
work at a local childcare center for 50% of the class time. This is not a
paid internship experience, but the course earns two credits and is held two
blocks to accommodate for the time at the centers. Attendance is critical
for this course. Students earn their internship grade for going to work on
the days scheduled. There is no make-up available regardless of the reason
for absence.

There are two requirements for students to participate in the
internship. Each student must have a TB test. TB tests are good for only
one year, so if your student has had one since January 2007, please send in a
copy. I will schedule a day to take students to the Health Department to get
a test. The fee is $10.00. The second requirement is each student must have
a scrub top to wear to work. This is a required uniform for staff at most of
the centers. Each student must wear it to work or they will not be allowed
on the bus to go to work.
