    1.  What made the election of 1800 so significant in American political history? peaceful transfer of power
    2.  What were the provisions of the following treaties:  Jay's Treaty, Pickney's Treaty, Treaty of Greenville, & Convention of 1800? Jay's Treaty:  Britain had the right to seize cargo bound for French ports & agreed to international arbitration, British gave up forts in American territory and gave the U.S. most-favored nation status.  Pickney's Treaty:  U.S. given the right to navigate the Mississippi & to deposit goods in New Orleans.  Treaty of Greenville:  Native American Nations gave up part of southern Ohio & Indiana in exchange for money.  Convention of 1800:  U.S. gave up claims against France for damage to American shipping & France released the U.S. from the Treaty of 1778.
    3.  Why did Napolean sell Louisiana to the U.S.? France needed the money and Napoleon didn't want the U.S. & Great Britain to form an alliance
    4.  What led to the war with the Barbary States?  Jefferson refused to keep making tribute payments to the Barbary States & they declared war
    5.  What was the purpose of the Embargo of 1807?  Jefferson wanted to avoid war & asked Congress to halt all trade between the U.S. & Europe
    6.  How did the Supreme Court decision in Marbury v. Madison strengthen the federal judiciary? created judicial review

    3.  How did Chief Justice John Marshall strengthen the Supreme Court? strengthened the power of the federal government over the power of the state governments
    4.  How did the rural landscape change with the building of the National Road? farmland was lost, forests had to be cut down, more people passing through created noise & pollution, new towns
    5.  How did the Monroe Doctrine reinforce President Washington's ideas about foreign policy? reduced the possibility that the U.S. would become involved in European affairs

                                   Great Awakening? 1st=reaction to loss of religious zeal, sermons promised
                                   sinners would go to hell 2nd=perception American were losing their faith, 
 
                                   sermons were emtotional instead of fearful
                               2. List movements in American cultural movements in the mid 1800s. nativism, 
                                   revivalism, romanticism, transcentalism, utopian communities
                               3. What new religious group formed in the 1830s?  Mormons
                               4. Why did so many Irish & German immigrants come to the U.S. at this time? 
                                   Irish=potato famine  German=escape revolution & repression
