Dear Small Learning Community Student and Parent,
This is a very exciting opportunity for your child! The Small Learning
Community enables teachers to design instruction around the individual needs
of the learner. Working in a cross-disciplinary academic team, teachers will
share instructional techniques, plan interdisciplinary activities, and
exchange information on the strengths and weaknesses of each student.
Through this community the teachers will be able to provide rigor and
relevance to all of their lessons and build strong relationships with all of
their students. The community provides classes for both general as well as
honors students.
• The Small Learning Community vision is to facilitate growth of each
student to become a productive and contributing member of society who is
committed to life long learning. The Small Learning Community will provide a
more rigorous and relevant educational experience by fostering meaningful
relationships among teachers, peers and parents.
Goals and Objectives
1) Improve academic performance
2) Foster relationships with teachers and staff
3) Reduce disciplinary actions
4) Improve attendance
5) Improve parent communication and involvement
Student Led Conferencing
• Students lead a conference with their parents explaining their
academic progress in each of their core classes. Your student’s conference
will occur the semester they have their science class. You will receive more
information closer to the conference date.
Field Trips:
We will attend one field trip this year. The purposes of the field trip are
to incorporate cross curriculum collaboration, improve team building within
the community, and provide academic enrichment.
Homework: Many have found that the courses taken in the ninth grade were the
first truly challenging and difficult courses that they have taken. HOMEWORK
IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED WHEN ASSIGNED! When there is not a homework
assignment, each student should at least review his/her notes from each day.
Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be issued every other Wednesday.
Students are required to have these reports signed by a parent and returned
to the teacher in a timely fashion.
Attendance and Make-Up Work: We will follow the school policy regarding
attendance and make-up work.
Behavioral Expectations: Students should be in the right place, at the right
time, doing the right thing! It is that simple! Parents will be contacted
as needed and any support they can provide will be greatly appreciated.
There are, however, some non-negotiable policies that will be enforced by all
members of your students’ team.
Non-negotiables:
1. Respect all teachers and classmates.
2. Respect the space around you (clean up after yourself and respect school
property).
3. No food or drink will be tolerated in class with the exception of drinks
with screw on caps.
4. No electronic devices are allowed. If they are seen or heard, they will
be confiscated and
turned into the dean’s office with no exceptions. Parents will be able to
retrieve the device
from the dean.
5. Cheating will not be tolerated. A grade of zero will be given to all
parties, and the work will be confiscated.
6. No profanity allowed!
7. Id’s must be visibly worn above the waist. Any student not following
these guidelines will have another id issued. A student will be charged
$5.00 for each additional id ordered. Non-payment of id fines could result
in exclusion from extra curricular activities.
8. Skipping any class at any time will result in an automatic referral.
Tardy Policy: A student is late if he/she comes into class after the bell
rings. All students are expected to be in class ON TIME!
1st time late-warning
2nd time late-warning with a teacher/student conference
3rd time late-call home and 30 minute detention
If a student does not show up for any detention with the teacher, the student
will be referred to the Dean of Students.
4th time late-automatic referral to the Dean.
Incentives: Each teacher will select one student a week for the “Star
Student” award. This student will be selected due to overall citizenship
and/or academic performance.
Hall passes: Each student will be given three hall passes from each teacher
for each nine-week period.
