Strategies for Success
Reading II
Ms Warren
Dear Parents,
I am very happy to work with your child this semester. In my class your
child will learn useful strategies for test preparation, organization, and
self-advocacy with an emphasis placed on improving reading comprehension.
The class is divided into two parts. The first 45 minutes of each 90 minute
block is devoted to instruction in the aforementioned areas while the
remaining time is used for academic assistance. Below you will find
objectives for this course. If you have any questions or concerns this

The student will:
• Select, monitor, and modify as necessary reading strategies
appropriate to purpose.
Demonstrate improved comprehension of main idea and supporting details
• Make connections between text, self, and related topics.
• Make inferences, predictions, and draw conclusions based on text.
• Incorporate effective media and technology to inform or explain.
• Describe and analyze the characteristics of literary genre.
• Increase reading fluency.
• Explore desired career and/or post-secondary school requirements.
• Organize classroom materials.
• Develop effective communication and collaboration skills.
• Identify and apply practical test taking skills.
• Identify and apply time management techniques.
• Identify and utilize effective note-taking skills.
• Develop efficient and effective study skills.
• Develop self advocacy skills by describing preferred
learning style and class modifications
*Student’s progress will be monitored at the beginning, interim, and end of
the semester.
