***IMPORTANT INFORMATION***
New Vaccine Requirement for Rising 6th Graders

There are new immunization requirements for students in North Carolina.
Required Immunization is:

TdaP Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccine with Pertussis added

*Required for students entering 6th grade on or after August 1, 2008 if five
or more years have
passed since their last dose of Td (commonly called “Tetanus” shot.)

*Tdap is now required to protect against pertussis (whooping cough).
Whooping cough is a serious illness, and outbreaks can occur at any time.

Suggested Immunizations are:

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics
(AAP) advise
that pre-teens get these additional vaccines at their 11 or 12 year old check
up.

*Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) to protect against most kinds of
bacterial meningitis, an infection that comes on rapidly. This illness is
spread by saliva, by sharing personal items or in the air. Living in close
contact with others, such as college dorms, spreads the disease more quickly.

*Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, for girls ages 9-26. This vaccine
protects against genital warts and cervical cancer.

*Second dose of MMR (if not already received) because a second dose of MMR is
now required for college admission.

For more information on these and other vaccines, talk with your doctor or
visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/default.htm

AVID

AVID is a college preparatory program for students "in the middle" and is
focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading. Research of the AVID
program and the students' who participate in it indicates that AVID students
out perform non-AVID students and have substantially higher college
participation and completion rates. Students prepared through the AVID
program will be more academically successful in rigorous middle school and
high school curricula.

The AVID elective (available only to 6th grade students in participating
schools) provides academic instruction in core content, tutorial support, and
motivational activities. The curriculum is based on writing as a tool of
learning, inquiry method, collaborative grouping, and academic reading. AVID
students are concurrently enrolled in 6th grade advanced math.

Who should be considered:

Student with level 2, 3 and an occasional level 1 or 4 EOG score
Student with generally average grades- C's and B's and the occasional F, D or
A-or in standards based grading, grades of 2,3, occasional 1 and 4
Student who struggles with time management, organization, following
directions, completing homework, and/or being prepared for class
Student with little support at home
LEP student
Student from a population typically under represented in advanced/honors
curricula
First-generation college student
If your child meets most of the above criteria, he or she should be
considered for AVID. Please get in contact with me.
