MCES PTA General Meeting
4/17/12



1.	Call to order – 6:36pm

2.	Declare a quorum –  no

3.	Attendees: (11) Beth Lewis, Deanna Zolfo, Victor Denny, Gaye Esser, Melanie Parrish, Elizabeth 
Sherman, Kelly Bradshaw, Danae Hudson, Kim Gervase,  Lyn Lucovsky, Tamy Clark, Dawn Matta, Linda 
Chaloupecky.

4.	Approval of minutes – Deanna shared minutes from last meeting were approved and posted on 
the PTA website and a hardcopy posted on PTA bulletin board in school hallway. Mr. Denny made first 
motion to approve, 2nd motion made by Elizabeth Sherman. Motion passed to approve meeting 
minutes from April 2012 meeting.

5.	Unfinished Business
	
A.	Thank you's to Hospitality Committee (Karri Stamer, Brenda Gerkin, Kelli Race), - Chick Fil A 
lunch was great! Next one coming up soon…
B.	Grounds Day (Mike Beahn 7 many, many volunteers, plus key club members). Sand project for 
K-2 pushed to next summer.
C.	Teacher Bathroom Painting Project for Teacher Appreciation (Deanna Zolfo and Ashley Peay-
Bettini) – several bathrooms underway; plan to be complete by end of May. Outside cabana 
bathrooms will be painted in the Fall. They also will be buying little tables and baskets to display the 
collected soaps/lotions/potpourri, etc.
D.	Cultural Arts (Laura Collins and Transit),  - Transi, accappella group,  was awesome. President 
would like to support them getting more funds on next year’s buget to increase cultural arts events 
for all tracks next year.
E.	Grade Night Out (Carrie Ward and Kim Avery) – great job at Moe’s in Fuquay-Varina.
F.	Science Olympiad (Kim Gervase)
G.	Field Day (Gina Miller and Joe Brown). – T 1&3 went great…lots of popcorn. Acquired enormous 
Twister game with dice,which was a big hit, and jump ropes ($500)…next week T 2&4.

6.	New Business

	A.  Vote in Nominating Committee – tabled to next month, since quorum not present.
	B.  Nominating Committee Report – Deanna Zolfo reported that more details would be shared 
next month. She, Dawn Navarro and Diane Hayes are working on filling open positions for next year’s 
PTA.
	C.  Science Olympiad – went REALLY well, 189 kids, 9 diff schools, Mr. Tata handed out awards, 
very big deal to have the Wake Cty superintendent present. His support and inertia helped us bring 
the event to West Lake Middle next year. No negative feedback reported to PTA. Kids got to wear t-
shirt in school on Mon for add’l recognition.
	D.  Carnival – Lyn Lucovskyreported that this year’s event is looking to be fantastic. Not in a 
crisis mode at all. 26 more adult volunteers needed, 2 hr shifts: Snow Hill. Have reached out to Key 
Clubs at Middle Creek and Apex, and Service group at Lufkin and ??  school. Volunteers can start 
coming at noon, officially set up is 2pm. Helps to prepare Cake Walk dishes with plastic wrap. Kid 
Raffles and Silent Auction items - 20 boy and 20 girl bundles for raffle baskets. Carnival website link 
on MCES website, and then link to silent auction items for a sneak peek…up to $8,000 in value.. ½ 
activities are free, other ½ fee for an activity card, 2-6 punches.
	E.  Cultural Arts – Holly’s Harps, last day tomorrow…..kids loving it! Silent and mesmerized. 
Would like to double budget next year from 8-16K – 4th gr Writer in Residence included in that amt.
	F.  Meeting with Mr. Tata – to discuss bell, tomorrow, at noon. At crossroads, Beth’s email.
	G. Hospitality – teacher apprec. week in May – Tuscan BRIO donating 2 lunches to teachers.
	H. Bookfair 2012-2013 – Dawn Matta, next year’s theme: sports-related. Looking for 
professional athlete speakers. Contact Dawn if you have any leads.
	
7.	Report of the Treasurer – none.

8.	Report of the Principal – THANK YOU PTA for all you do. We admire and respect you all for what 
you do individually and as a group; Lots of student participation in PTA events, like in Reflections, 
Science Olympiad, Spelling Bee. Next week mtg with all teachers. Heads up there will be a lock down 
drill during lunch and recess. Will walk thru with kids. Just an FYI that plans are in place.

9.	Report of the Teacher Representative – none.

10.	Announcements
April 17-18 - Cultural Arts : Holly's Harps : All Tracks K-2 only
April 20 - Field Day : Tracks 2 & 4 : Rain Date : Monday, April 23
	April 27 – School Supply Kit orders due
	April 27 – Early Release Teacher Luncheon : 11:45-1:00pm
	April 28 – CARNIVAL : 4:00-8:00pm
	May 7-11 - Teacher Appreciation Week : Tracks 1&2
	May 15 – PTA Meeting:  6:30-7:30pm : Vote in 2012-2013 Board and appoint committee chairs
	May 21-25 – Teacher Appreciation Week : Tracks 3&4
