Counselors assist North Davie students in:

Academic Development

· Gaining attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school.

· Becoming academically prepared to face a wide range of postsecondary options.

· Understanding how school relates to life.

Career Development

· Investigating the world of work and making informed decisions regarding careers.

· Understanding how personal qualities, education and training relate to careers.

Personal/Social Development

· Gaining understanding of themselves and others.

· Gaining skills in effective personal relations and peaceful conflict resolution.

· Making decisions, setting goals, and taking necessary action to achieve goals.

When should you contact the counseling center?

When you have concerns about the educational, academic, career, personal and social needs of your child; we would encourage you to contact the school-counseling center. The counseling center is available to help all students grow personally and socially in such areas as making effective decisions, recognizing and utilizing their personal strengths, acquiring knowledge and skills to achieve academically, and career exploration. The school counselors provide counseling, consultation, and coordination of services with outside agencies and the school community, to help remove any barriers impeding your child’s learning.

Particular Indicators that your child may benefit from counseling include:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Excessive anger, worry, sadness or fear
  • Failure to learn or other school problems
  • Behavior which is immature for the child’s age
  • Behavior which interferes with making friends
  • Problems with eating, sleep or elimination
  • Physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach aches which have no medical basis
  • Difficulty adjusting to family changes
  • Talking about not wanting to live
  • Excessive shyness

Experiencing trauma such as:

  • Chronic illness
  • Illness or injury of a family member
  • Divorce or separation of parents
  • Death of a close family member or friend
  • Disasters such as accidents, fires, or flooding
  • Hospitalization
  • Painful or frightening medical procedures
