The Common Application for Undergraduate College Admission:

The Common Application membership association was established
in 1975 by 15 private colleges that wished to provide a
common, standardized first-year application form for use at
any member institution. With the administrative support of the
National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP),
the organization grew steadily throughout its first 30 years.

Now in our fourth decade, the Common Application currently
provides both online and print versions of its First-year and
Transfer Applications. Our membership of nearly 400
institutions now represents the full range of higher education
institutions in the US: public and private, large and small,
highly selective and modestly selective, and East Coast, West
Coast, and every region in between.

The application includes the common admissions essay
questions.

Please note, however, that even the colleges participating in
the Common Application may have additional essay questions to
which you should respond. Make sure you check out each
college's admission Website.

Member Colleges/Universities of the Common Application:

You can also go to the main Website and plug your college(s)
into a search engine.

The following NC schools are members: Davidson College, Duke
University, Guilford College, Lees-McRae College, Meredith
College, Salem College, Wake Forest University, UNC-CH, & UNC-W.

Member Colleges/Universities of the Common Application

Founded in 2007, the Universal College Application includes
over 85-member colleges and universities. It differs from the
Common Application in that it includes colleges that do not
require admission essays and/or teacher recommendations.

However, note that just as with the Common Application, some
colleges that use the universal application still require a
supplemental section for students applying to their colleges.

UNC-CH now uses the Common Application. Download that form or
apply online. The Common Application will prompt you to complete a
short supplement for UNC-CH. It may contain an additional essay
prompt.

You may also apply to UNC-CH via the College Foundation of North
Carolina. If you do so, you may have additional essay questions.

You can apply to UNC-CH via the College Foundation of North
Carolina.
College Foundation of North Carolina

UNC-W now allows students to apply via the Common Application or
the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC).

You will also have to have complete a supplement to the Common
Application. It requires you to write a 200-word response to this
question:

Please respond to the following prompt thoughtfully in no more
than 200 words:

Describe why UNCW would be a good fit for your educational goals.

You can also apply directly to UNC-W, but I recommend using the
Common Application, as the essay prompts to the Common Application
are easier to respond to than UNC-W's prompt.
