Pre-K (under construction)

Kindergarten

Kindergarteners are introduced to Kelso the frog and his nine ways to solve small problems.  Kelso teaches that children can solve small problems but should go to an adult when there is a big problem.  Big problems are situations where a child is in danger.

Kelso's nine choices for solving small problems are the following:

  • go to another game
  • make a deal
  • talk it out
  • wait and cool off
  • ignore it
  • walk away
  • share and take turns
  • apologize
  • tell them to stop

Children are taught to try 2 of  Kelso's choices, in combination.  As an example, talk it out and make a deal.

Second Grade

Different and the Same" is a video and activity series developed by Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood" fame.  Puppets and real life adults who serve as teachers and mentors present programs that deal with name calling, stereotyping, and relationship problems between friends. "Different and the Same" is based on four principles that coincidentally form the acronym FAIR--fairness, awareness, inclusion, and respect.

Third Grade

"Talking with T.J. Teamwork Series" is a program of entertaining video stories and related activities.   T. J. is a girl who helps kids with their problems by talking to them on the radio.  The series teaches children basic skills in three areas related to cooperation and teamwork:  1) making group plans, 2) appreciating differences and including people, and 3) playing as a cooperative team in competitive situations.

Fifth Grade

"Growing Good Kids" is a guidance series that allows students to experience the joy of learning about themselves while acting in the service of others.  All activities contain these elements: 1) cognitive and affective learning (For example, the lesson "Grate Misteaks" provides the cognitive lesson that mistakes sometimes lead to important inventions.  It also invites students to explore the affective concept that none of us is perfect.) 2) experiential learning (Students know about life and themselves, and they are always curious to learn more.) 3)  product focused (Every activity allows students to concretely demonstrate their thinking and feeling.)
