About Me
Once upon a time, a long time ago in Clinton, NC a child that loved to hear stories was born. Her parents named her Doris. Many of Doris’s earliest memories are of stories told by family and friends. Her mother often read books to her and an older brother and younger sister. The family subscribed a special magazine for children and they would often argue over who would get to read it and work the puzzles first.
All through elementary school and high school, Doris loved to read and handle books. In the first grade, she got a prize for reading the most books (she doesn’t remember what the prize was). In high school, she helped the high school librarian. Because she loved books and working with other children, Doris Melson decided that she would become a librarian. To help her learn more about the profession, she attended and received degrees from both East Carolina University and Appalachian State University.
After college, she started working as a librarian at a junior high school in Statesville, NC. After two years, she moved to Greensboro, NC and liked it so well she decided to stay.
As a librarian in the public schools, she worked for many, many years with lots of students and teachers. In 1997, she decided that she should try retirement. For a number of years, she enjoyed traveling. She visited lots of new places and made many new friends. However, she realized that she missed working with people. She started looking for a something to do. She found a job in a bookstore and worked there for a short period of time. That job was fun but the hours were CRAZY. She remembered how much she enjoyed working with books and young people. In January, 2001, she started working as librarian at Our Lady of Grace School and has worked there happily ever since. THE END!
