Guidance

January 23, 2012:  We have concluded the Touching Safety classes in all classes K-8.  Parents, please ask your children about the program. The materials are excellent and hopefully, after having the topic addressed each year in an age appropriate manner, children will have a knowledge and understanding of their rights of privacy and would be better able to protect themselves if an unsafe situation should ever arise.

January 2012:  This is a very busy year in the guidance department.  All classes grades 1-8 are participating in an anti-bullying program from OLWEUS.  Homeroom teachers conduct regular meetings with their classes.  While we stress the positive "unbridled acts of kindness" we also are aware that we need to address some of the relational issues young people face.  This program hopefully helps them to deal with bullying issues if they should arise.

During January Mrs Shaw is meeting with all classes K-8 for a session on what the diocese calls "Touching Safety".  This is a specific training program taught at the grade level of the students. The students learn to identify safe and unsafe touch, what to do if they are ever in a situation where they feel uncomfortable by the attentions of an adult or older child.  The children are urged to talk with their parents about what they have learned during the guidance lesson.

Personal and academic counseling:  Mrs Shaw meets throughout the year with students who have been referred by their teachers or parents regarding personal or academic concerns.  Students also often ask to speak with the counselor with a particular dilemma they are facing.

August 2011:  Welcome back, Mustangs!  It is so good to see those of you who have been here in the past, but it is also great to welcome our new students.  Our focus this year in Guidance will be to follow Sister Geri's theme for the year, which is "Do all things in memory of Me".  We will continue fostering Unbridled Acts of Kindness throughout our school.

We are introducing a new program in grades 1 through 8 this year. It is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.  This is a program used in several schools in our diocese and comes highly recommended.  Homeroom teachers will conduct class meetings to discuss positive ways of making sure every child feels welcome and included.  Sister Geri reminds our children that Our Lady of Mercy means Our Lady of Kindness and we try very hard to live up to our name!
