Literacy

Reading

Phonological Awareness/Word Study 

    • Demonstrate an understanding that sequence of letters in written words represent sequence of sound in a spoken word
    • Blends individual sounds that are heard into a 2-3 phoneme word (/c/,/a/, /t/ says "cat")
    • Segments the sounds of a spoken 2-3 phoneme word into individual phonemes (I hear /c/, /a/, /t/ in the word "cat")

Before Reading

  • Formulates questions that a text might answer before beginning to read
  • Uses preparation strategies to activate prior knowledge and experience before reading the text

During Reading

  • Recognizes some high frequency words by sight (80%)
  • Associates target words with prior knowledge
  • Reads predictable text using letter/sound knowledge and pictures to construct meaning
  • Uses strategies to activate prior knowledge and experienc during reading
  • Predicts possible event during reading
  • Demonstrates the following strategies:
    • using first letter sounds to check predictions (cross-checking)
    • using known words to monitor reading (self-monitoring)

After Reading

  • Recounts story setting, character, and events
  • Recounts important concepts and details in informational texts
  • Discusses concepts and information in a text to clarify and extend knowledge
  • Discusses text to discover relationships
  • Explores an author's choice of words

Reading a Variety of Texts

    • Demonstrates familiarity with a variety of types of books (short informational texts, picture books, etc.)
    • Interacts for at least 10 minutes daily with self-selected texts 

Writing

Content

  • Writes and/or participates in writing behaviors by using author's models of language
  • Writes one or two thoughts, sentences, or bare ideas
  • Focuses on topic

Language Patterns and Word Choice

  • Uses new vocabulary in own speech and writing
  • Uses singular and plural nouns and past tense regular verbs correctly
  • Produces 5 to 7 word sentences
  • Maintains conversation and discussions by taking turns expressing ideas

Conventions

  • Develops spelling strategies and skills by representing spoken language with temporary and/or conventional spelling (mostly consonants)

Goal 1:  The learner will investigate hou individuals, families, and groups are similar and different.

2.01  Exhibit citizenship traits such as integrity, responsibility, and trustworthiness in the classroom, school, and other social environments

Science

Goal 1: The learner will make observations and build an understanding of the similarities and differences in animals

    •  Observe and describe the similarities and differences among animals including: structure, growth, changes, movement
    • Observe how animals interact with their surroundings
    • Observe the behaviors of common animals
    • Ovserve the similarities of humans to other animals including: basic needs, growth and change, movement

Goal 2: The learner will make observations and build an understanding of weather concepts

    • Observe and report daily weather changes throughout the year
    • Identify different weather features including: precipitation, wind, temperature, cloud cover
    • Identify types of precipitation, changes in wind, force, direction and sky conditions
    • Observe and determine effects of weather on human activities
    • Use common tools to measure weather

Goal 3:  The learner will make observations and build an understanding of the properties of common objects

    •  Using their own senses, describe how objects look, feel, smell, taste, and sound
    • Identify some common objects and organisms that are considered to be natural resources in our world

Goal 4: The learner will use appropriate tools and measurements to increase their ability to describe their world

    • Describe how tools can be used to make comparisons
    • Observe and describe how various tools and units of measurement are useful 
    • Use nonstandard units of measure to describe and compare objects
