Reading instruction at Parsley is a primary focus for our staff this
year. We have a new schoolwide schedule which introduces a
90 minute reading block at the very beginning of our day. This will allow
the entire school to collaborate and focus on reading together. We are very
exicted to be using many Reading First Strategies in all grade levels. This
will ensure that the five big ideas of reading are emphasized in all
classrooms. These 5 big ideas are phomemic awareness (beginning sounds,
ending sounds, rhyming and more), phonics (word attack skills to
sound out new words), vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
Please help us with our reading focus by having your child in class and
ready to read when the reading block begins at 8:00. You can also enjoy
your reading time at home with your children and follow it up with some open
ended questions or discussions to help them think about what they read in new
and different ways.
