How can I help my child read?

If you find a book seems rather easy for your child, or it is a book your 
child has already read, you should take the opportunity to work on skills 
such as fluency and using expression (voice inflection and intonation).  If 
you find your child is struggling with a book there are several things you 
can do!  First have your child take a picture walk (look through the entire 
book at the pictures only and discuss with your child what he/she thinks is 
happening).  From the picture walk, your child should have a prediction of 
whom, does what, and where.  The next step is to break apart any words 
causing difficulty.  Have your child �stretch out� the word by slowly saying 
each sound and then say it fast.  If your child still can�t figure out the 
word, have him/her skip the word and finish as much of the sentence as 
possible, then go back and try to fill in the blank with words that would 
make sense and begin and end with the same sounds as the word that is 
written (we call this skip and read).  Lastly, you can help by sounding out 
the word, having your child then sound it out with you and say the word 
together.
