Introduction
For this assignment you will pretend that you are a newsperson that is researching Langston Hughes for a major interview on CBS with Oprah Winjoy about this famous writer and the era in which he wrote in. In order to get the interview with her, the class will be asking each of you questions to see who knows the most about him and the Harlem Renaissance.
Task
Working
in groups of four you will each be assigned a job. Once you have decided who will complete what
job, you will get to work on exploring the life of Langston Hughes, a famous
African author who thrived during the Harlem Renaissance. A poster will be presented to the class at
the end of this assignment. Process
1.
Background of Langston Hughes
– Look up the answers to the following questions on this worksheet. 2.
Come
up with two different photographs
of the Harlem Renaissance era that you can print and put on a poster. 3.
Each
group will work together to write a three-paragraph paper about the life of Langston
Hughes (this will also be put on your poster). 4.
Mapping! I would like each group to draw a map on
your group poster where Langston Hughes was born. This website will help you out!
Just click on our continent, then click on the United States, and
finally, the state he is from and it will give you a detailed map of that
state!! Have fun! 5.
Go
to poets page and explore
additional information about Langston Hughes.
Why do you think his poems were so important during the Harlem
Renaissance? Please click on I, Too, Sing America and
complete a Quick Write. 6.
Go
to Harlem
(click on a Place Called Harlem) on a tour.
Each group must choose two spots that they want to learn about. Please put those two locations on your
poster (you may use a drawing, photograph, write a paragraph, or write a poem
about what that spot meant to writers during this dynamic time).
Evaluation

Conclusion
Each
group will submit their poster to the class and “teach” the rest of us what
they learned. The class will then
choose a winning group to do the interview with Oprah Winjoy about Langston
Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance. The
winners will be filmed live to perform their interview on the Parsley Today Show!!
