Homework

Homework is assigned Monday-Friday.

Reading:  Students are expected to read 25 minutes each night and record what they read on their monthly reading logs.  These should be kept inside their homework folders and brought back and forth from home to school.  I do try to check these daily and will sign off on each completed day.  Reading logs are part of your child's daily homework.  If your child skips days on their reading log, they will make up this time in Study Hall during Responsibility Friday.

Spelling:  There will be 20 words assigned this week.  The spelling skill for the week of May 7th-May 11th:  Long O and U spelled UI, UE, OE, and OW.  Words are: bow, tow, low, show, rainbow, oboe, toe, fruit, cruise, bruise, juice, fluid, avenue, true, fondue. There are 5 bonus words that will be student selected.  Please refer to your child's spelling list for the week to identify these words.  Bonus words selected by students are: manufacture, dachshunds, exclamation point, France, force field.

Scrabble Spelling:  Write your spelling words (bonus words are not required for this activity but should be reviewed) and use the scrabble letters to add up how much each

word is worth.  Example:  way = 4 + 1 + 4 = 9

Scrabble letters can be found on the bottom of the page.
(This was explained to them the first day back from track out)

Thursday Student should number their paper 1-20 and a parent will call out each spelling word in a random order for student to take a spelling pretest at home.  At the end of the test the student needs to check their words and write any missed word 3 times each.  The parent (or other adult) should sign the bottom of the page to show that they gave the test to the student.
Friday No homework given.  Students will be tested on their weekly spelling words during their Whole Group Reading Time each week.

Math:  Math homework is assigned Monday through Friday.  Typically these assignments are torn out of their Math Expressions Homework and Targeted Practice books.

The assignments for May 7th-May 11th:

Monday:  page 283 and 284
Tuesday: array worksheet
Wednesday: pages 291 and 292
Thursday: measuring worksheet
Friday:  pages 293 and 294
Optional but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:  Students should be able to mentally add and subtract numbers with sums and differences up to 20 by the end of 2nd grade.  If you have flashcards available to use at home, please spend 5-10 minutes each day practicing these facts.  I would advise not practicing more than 15 minutes, as students have been "mentally drained" by the end of the day and need their free time.  Students need to be able to establish math fluency and should be able to instantly identify answers to basic number sentences.  Students can use their fingers to solve the flashcards at first, but eventually the goal is for them to do it without pausing. You can purchase most flashcards at any store or you can make your own at home using index cards.
