My work with children began in 1989 via a combined grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. This grant was for an
Artist in Residence in the Schools project involving a core group of 60
students for a period of five months. The focus was on hand papermaking from
four diverse cultures.I have taught on numerous grants from the North
Carolina Arts Council,Cameron Art Museum and the one time St. John's Museum
of Art in downtown Wilmington.I have also been a teacher for Dreams of
Wilmington for over a five year period and on occassion still give workshops
for them. Dreams is an arts outreach program for youth at risk in New
Hanover County. This is a valuable project that I continue to be involved
with when time allows.
In the summer of 09' a unique experience was offered to me, which I gladly
accepted. Paul Wilkes of Wilmington, representing Home of Hope, an orphanage
run by the Salesian Sisters in Kochi, India, sponsored a working visit on my
behalf. During my six weeks of living with the girls and the Sisters, I
taught art and English in the classrooms of their school, and completed the
assignment that sent me there: a dedication mural on the front of a new
building which is to be home for the girls. The girls are now happily in
their new space. Much thanks to all who helped, unsolicited, with art
supplies and contributions for my journey. The words of "Desiderata" never
felt so true..."With all its shams, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still
a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." For more information
about Home of Hope (Parayasha Bhavan), please go to their website
www.homeofhopeindia.org.
From April, 2011, to the present, the Cameron Art Museum here in Wilmington
has had a show of my work, and family history on view. "Fritzi Huber: A
Circus Life" examines the way an individual's growing up affects who they
become (as an artist) in their adult life, how adult choices are influenced
by a personal past. This show has been well received, and has given me an
opportunity not only to show my work as a hand papermaker for over 30 years,
but to share the history of a unique family life.
This summer of 2011 Dreams of Wilmington hired Abby Spangel Perry and I to
work with their outreach summer camp program to create an interior mural in
the Wilmington Childrens Museum birthday space. If you would like to see this
instalation, please contact the Museum for their schedule.
Also, this summer I've attended workshops with Lincoln Center Institute, the
Kenan Institute for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council to be
certified in their International Educator Workshop facilitated by UNC School
of the Arts.
For more current activities see the "Announcements" catagory.
This semester I will be integrating studies from some of the other classes
that the students have. The goal is to reinforce those other areas of
learning while still keeping it all fun. The art classes have interfaced
with most grade levels on at least one project over this past year.
There will also be an integration of imaginative learning as taught by the
Lincoln Center Institute. This approach enhances the ability to learn not
only in the arts, but in any area of education.
