infinitives, appositives, and prepositions.  You should also vary your 
sentence beginnings. Begin with phrases and clauses to mix up the rhythm.

7th--Field trip tomorrow.  No morning class. Be prepared to write a draft of 
your personal narrative in Language Arts Enrichment.  The essay will be due 
next Friday.

8th--Select a topic for your personal anecdote poem.  --must include rhyme,

Remember, this is a DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY, NOT AN INFORMATIVE ONE.  That means 
that I should be able to picture and experience the place with my senses. The 
essay must have the proper heading, be double-spaced (typed or hand-written), 
include a title, have examples of at least two forms of figurative language 
(simile, metaphor, personification, or hyperbole), and appeal to at lease 
three senses.

7th--Write sentences using vocabulary words (one per sentence)--dissuade, 
ominous, allay, premonition, avert, calamity, fortitude, disposition, 
perilous, deluge, pungent, extricate, and culprit.  7 sentences must be 
complex, and 7 must be compound.  Sentences must contain context clues as to 
the definition  of the word. Identify the type of sentence.  Make sure the 
sentence is properly punctuated.

did not finish their adverb acrostic poem in class must do so for 
homework. (You will have to check it yourself.) Poems must have a title, the 
verb and the adverb must have alliteration, and the adverbs must be

Kate and Erica—In the story, find 2 sentences/each that contain the following 
phrases:  prepositional phrase, appositive phrase, infinitive phrase, gerund 
phrase, participial phrase.  Consider how these phrases help to emphasize 
certain key points or help to paint good pictures.  Be sure to use your 
notes.  This will be graded!

Taylor, and Ryan—Comb through the text and find a minimum of 5 examples of 
humor that help to define this as a comic tale of self-delusion.

Gabbi—Illustrate Ichabod on his horse on the way to the party.

Brittany and Nicole—Find 3 examples/each of hyperbole, simile, metaphor, and 
personification, and alliteration.  Consider how these literary devices 
enhance your understanding and appreciation of the story.

Isabella and Hayley—Find pictures/write descriptions of clothing that would 
have been worn during the time period of our story—early 1800s.  You should 
discuss what men, women, and children would have worn.

Madi, Courtney, and Matthew—Comb through the story and identify key visual 
images that help to define the various scenes in your mind.  Find pictures in 
magazines or online that will help us when we begin to illustrate the

page for an understanding of what will be covered on the test. As I mentioned 
in class, the sentences I am using on the test come from your social studies 
book (Chapter 6). Therefore, it might be good practice to look over Chapter 6 
to see if you can recognize the nouns (common and proper) and pronouns in the 
chapter. (And, you'll be studying for social studies at the same time!!!) 
Remember to review all of the clues I have given you to help you recognize a 
noun.

7th--Finish rough draft of folk tale persuasive paper.  Make sure you are 
telling what makes the tale well suited for ORAL tradition, not just what 
makes it a good story.  There is a difference!!  When you tell stories out 
loud, you must connect with your audience and keep them engaged.

8th--Quiz on phrases:  prepositional, appositive, gerund, infinitive, and 
participial.
