Curriculum 5th Grade
Students will develop and apply strategies and skills to comprehend text that is read, heard, and viewed.
Language Arts ( Storytown , Harcourt School Publishers)
Reading Comprehension : Story town provides explicit comprehension instruction that is designed to help students understand, remember , and communicate with others about what they read. Students will read a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry selections.
Students will use theses strategies to become better readers:

· Recognize Story Structure

Students will be expected to read at least 20 minutes everyday. Reading log
Students will read various class novels
- Learner will read and respond to historically or culturally significant works of literature.
Students will be expected to read certain genres and create various independent projects throughout the year.
- Learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual texts
- Students will deliver well- organized formal presentations.
- Students will make connections through the use of oral language, written language, and media and technology
Writing: The students will integrate writing every day into the reading program. Theme Writing, Weekly Writing and Daily Writing Prompts will support writing and grammar skills.

Students will learn to apply grammar to communicate effectively in speech and in writing.
Vocabulary : Students will learn the meaning of specific words as well as word-learning strategies. Student –Friendly Explanations are used to help students understand word meaning.
Spelling : Students will study the meaning of words as well as practice correct spelling techniques.
Writing and Daily Writing Prompts will support writing and grammar skills.
Grading : Comprehension 30%,Grammar 15%,Reading 10%, Spelling 15%, Writing 30%
6th Grade Curriculum
Reading
Students will read various genres of literature both in classroom and at home.These genres
include:fiction,non-fiction,autobiographies,biographies,historical fiction,mysteries,plays,myths fables,essays, and poerty.
We read various class novels throughout the year.
Students will
- read and understand grade-level appropriate material.
- be expected to respond to various literary genres using interpretive and evaluative processes.
- read and respond to historically or culturally significant works of literature that reflect and enhance studies of history and social science.
- be expected to keep a reading log monthly throughout the year.
- learn new vocabulary words weekly.Students will determine the meaning of specialized vocabulary and understand the precise meaning of grade appropriate words.
Writing
Students will keep a personal response journal.
The learner will
- use language to express individual perspectives in writing drawn from personal or related experiences.
- use critical thinking skills and create criteria to evaluate text and multimedia.
- write a narratives, expository compositions, persuasive essays, a personal and business letter, reviews, poems, plays, and a research paper.
- will pick either the DAR or Irish Essay to submit.
- use various types of media ,including reference books, and online information sites
- be expected to listen with respect.
Grammar
Students will
- learn the value of proper grammer and usage in writing and in speaking.
- read in choral groups to enhance fluency and comprehension. They will participate in cooperative groupng and work one ane one with the teacher.
- use technology for research and a mimio board for engagement and skill practice.
Students will be expected to write all final drafts in cursive or typed.
Students progress and knowledge will be assessed by final written work, daily journaling, writing prompts, small and cooperative group work, daily homework, quizzes and tests.
