Fifth grade clubs will be focused on independent study as students prepare
for middle school. Author study club, study hall, writer's workshop all fill
that bill for the month of January.
Fourth graders will begin a unit on resources that culminates in a month-long
scavenger hunt.
Third graders are still plugging away at the North Carolina Children's Book
Award nominees. We read and discuss the books. Each student has one vote
for the best of the selection; we send the votes to Raleigh to be counted
among those of students all over the state.
Second graders begin a unit on genre. We will read mysteries, adventures,
realistic fiction, poetry, biography, science fiction and books from the oral
tradition. Students will end the unit by making a genre wheel to test
themselves.
First graders are beginning an author study. They will read and compare
books by Jon Agee.
Kindergartners continue to work in their journals. They have begun to write
the titles of the books too, and this quarter will add the author's name at
the top of each entry.
