Helpful Hints to Help
Your Child Succeed in the Classroom
1) Be sure you are
helping/monitoring your child while they are completing their homework!
2) When your
child is reading at night be sure to ask them comprehension questions. This
not only gets you involved in their book, it gives you an idea on how they are
doing reading and comprehending independently. Don't forget their reading log
must also be signed!
3) When
working on vocabulary with your child try note cards. They can write the
spelling word on the front and place the definition on the back. Then you can
test them or they can practice on their own! This reviews the spelling and
the definition of the words.
4) Grammar is a area for all
students in fourth grade. We cover a lot of material before we test. Be sure
you are reviewing with your child at home weekly. This way when you get to
test time it will be much easier to review and your child will be fresh on all
content covered!
5) Math is another area that
can be difficult. We use the "Everyday Math" curriculum. The students are
asked not only to learn the material but apply what they learn as well. I
give out math worksheets for the students to complete as homework assignments
that reinforce what we learned in class. Please be sure you are reviewing
these with your child so they are prepared at test time.
6) Saving your child's math
homework worksheets would be a big help when you are trying to review for
their math test. The problems they have on their worksheets are just like
ones they will see on their test!
7)
Most of the tests we take, especially Religion, Science, and Social Studies,
focus on vocabulary. Making sure you are reviewing the vocabulary in these
subjects with your child on a weekly basis will help prepare your child for
their tests.
8) The chapters/lessons that
make up the Science and Social Studies units are very long, breaking them
down to review in sections will help!
9) Each
week on Thursday your child's tests from the prior week come home. You are
suppose to be reviewing these with your child at. This will help you see what
skills you need to be focusing on with your child, as well as, help your child
from making the same mistakes again. Please be sure you remember to sign and
return these in their red folder on Friday.
10)Be
sure when your child's reflection journal comes home with a letter in it for
you, you write them back! Your child really enjoys getting a letter from
you!
