Rules and Procedures

Students are allowed to have 2 books checked out at any given time.  Books can be

checked out for a maximum of 2 weeks and can be renewed if necessary.

Students using the media center during the school day should have a signed hall pass if they

are not accompanied by a teacher.

Students may visit the media center before or after school to select a book, conduct

research, take an AR test, or read silently (towards reading goal).  Students using

the media center during these times should have a signed note from a parent or teacher.

All students should sign in and out of the media center in the Student Sign-In notebook on

             the circulation desk.

Please leave all backpacks and other belongings on the left-hand side of the media

center entrance (below the office windows).

Please use soft voices and be respectful of other patrons using the media center.

Handle all books, magazines, and equipment with care.

Gum, food, and beverages should be consumed outside the media center.

Security Gate

Any student who takes a book through the security gate without checking out the book

at the circulation desk will be sent to the principal's office for stealing.

Any student caught playing with or vandalizing the security gate will be sent to the

     principal's office immediately.

Fines

Fines for overdue books are 10 cents per day (with a maximum of $5.00 per book).

Students with overdue fines under $5.00 can only check out one book until their

     balance is paid in full.

Students must pay full price for any books that are lost or damaged.

Students with lost/damaged books and/or fines over $5.00 are

allowed to check out one book.  However, they must pay 25 cents

per check out until their balance is under $5.00.

Library accounts of eighth graders that do not pay for fines or lost

books prior to the end of the school year will be transferred to the

    student's high school.

InfoCentre

Students can search for books in the library’s catalog (OPAC) both at school and at home.

At school:  Login > Click on Research > Library Info Center

At home:  Go to http://opac.nhcs.net/InfoCentre/PickALibrary.do and click on Virgo

The catalog can be searched by title, author, subject, or keyword.  Simply type in the word(s)

that you wish to search for and hit ENTER.  Remember to write down the CALL NUMBER of

the item(s) you want before you log out.

Students can view their circulation information (checkouts, overdues, fines, etc.) by going to

InfoCentre and clicking on the My Library Info tab at the top of the screen; this will bring up a login screen.  The Login and Patron ID needed are the same as the login and 6-digit

password used to log into the computer itself.

Recommendations

Award-winning books are always a great place to start when searching for a book to read.

           These national book awards include:

Newbery Medal - named in honor of eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery

                                      - awarded annually for excellent writing in children's literature

Caldecott Medal - named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott

                                      - awarded annually for excellent illustrations in children's literature

Coretta-Scott King Book Award - given to African-American authors and illustrators for

promoting an understanding and appreciation for the "American Dream"

Michael J. Printz Award - named in honor of a Topeka, Kansas school librarian

                                  - awarded annually for excellent writing in young adult (YA) literature

Margaret A. Edwards – awarded annually for lifetime achievement in young adult literature

The New Arrivals shelf (located to the right of the media center entrance) is also a great

place to look for a book.  All of the books in this section were purchased within the past year.

Can’t find the book you’re looking for?  Simply fill out a Recommendation Form (see folder in

the office windows) and I will do my best to add it to our library’s collection.  You may also

recommend books on a particular topic that you are interested in learning more about.  Please

make sure that any books/topics are appropriate for a school library.
