What are the 1st Quarter Math and Language Arts Objectives?
Reading
Before Reading Strategies
We will be learning to choose books for independent reading which best suit our interests and ability. We will preview books and stories and make predictions about story elements (character, setting, plot) and major events based on this preview.
During Reading Strategies
While reading narrative text we will learn how good readers make predictions, connections and ask questions. (CroP-Qv)
Genres
This quarter will focus on poetry by reading and understanding poetry. We will also learn to recognize similes, metaphors and idioms while reading poetry and begin to understand what they mean.
We will begin to recognize various types of nonfiction genres including biographies, articles and instructions.
Writing
This quarter we will write poetry, instructions, directions and notes. We will learn to explain to whom we are writing and the purpose for writing. Each writing sample will be on a self-selected topic as evidenced through brainstorming and will follow a main idea. We will begin to revise our own writing by adding descriptive words and strong verbs. Evidence of proper spelling, use of periods and commas and legible handwriting will be present in all writing samples.
What is OTIS?
OTIS (Organize This Important Stuff) is a notebook your child
will keep throughout the year that has all their classwork and
homework. It is a system to help your child be more independent
with keeping up with assignments.
