HOW IT ALL WORKS
This year in Third Grade I will be focusing on AR to help students improve their reading fluency and comprehension. AR is more than just a program about points and while I know that is how the school recognizes students, I will NOT be emphasizing points.
AR was developed by Reading Renaissance and the primary goal is to improve comprehension and fluency at each student's most beneficial level. Within an average classroom students will have quite varied reading ranges. This is not unusual and is the best way to differentiate instruction so that each child receives instruction at the level they need.
I will be emphasizing book level average as well as average percent correct. The goal for every student is to be reading a book within their zone of proximal development (ZPD) and to score an average of 85% or higher on all quizzes. Student's book levels will adjust quarterly according to their performance and at other times on an as needed basis.
Students will be asked to read a minimum amount of books each quarter, take and pass an AR quiz with a minimum score of 80% (anything less does not count as a book read). The amount they will be asked to read per quarter will vary. They may also be asked to complete a written reading project with each book. The assignments and the genres of books they are asked to read will vary depending on what is being studied that quarter.
AR REMINDERS
*Students should be taking an AR book home nightly and bringing it to school and my classroom daily.
*Students must read a picture book 3 times before quizzing. *Students may take notes on novels and non-fiction books in order to help them remember. Notes may be taken to the computer for reference but books may not.
*Quizzes may be taken on classroom computers any morning prior to the second bell and during other down times with teacher's permission.
*Parents may read with students and students are still able to take an AR quiz on the book.
*Students may only take quizzes on books that are within the ZPD I have set for them or have been approved by me.
