Understanding Lexiles

Many parents are confused about Lexiles.  We've been using Lexiles at White Oak for about three years.  Many of our books in the library have a Lexile level.  Students are encouraged to progress as readers using their individual assigned reading goals and their Lexile levels.  Reading goals are set quarterly to encourage students to read at a level that is challenging, but not too difficult.

With Lexiles, reading measurement matches students to appropriately challenging reading materials. How it works:  Lexiles measure both reader ability and text difficulty on the same scale.  This is called the Lexile scale.   At the beginning of the school year and each quarter our students will take a test called an SRI, short for Scholastic Reading Inventory.  This computer assessment gives students a Lexile level.  The goal is to increase or show growth each quarter.  Students who read regularly on their Lexile level using a variety of text are much more likely to be successful at improving their reading skills.

One source recommends that the average Lexile level for students at the end of third grade is: 665 to 940.
