Dear Parents and Students,
Students will continue to work on subtraction with regrouping this week
with multi-digit numbers and across zeros. Students will also be using
subtraction with problem solving. We will continue to go to the lab to do
FastMath to increase speed with subtraction facts. Students should continue
to study flash cards at home for 5 minutes nightly.
We have been reading fiction chapter books that weave facts about
Ancient Egypt in our readng groups. We will continue to work on reading
Mummies in the Morning and Tut, Tut. We will also be going to the lab to do
a webquest on Ancient Egypt. Students will also get to write their names in
Egyptian hieroglyphs through a website. This unit integrates our reading,
science, and social studies curriculum. The students are learning about
communities past and present and roles in communities, as well as skeletons
and muscle in science. When we finish with these students will be tested on
comprehension/vocabulary at the end of this unit. (One group is reading:
Magic Tree House Mummies in the Morning by Mary Pope Osborne and two groups
are reading: Tut, Tut by Jon Scieszka.) If students are absent, students may
borrow the book their group is reading to take home nightly to make up the
work, but time in the classroom is limited for makeup work.
Conferences continue this week. If you cannot make your scheduled time
please let me know. I look forward to meeting with you to share your child's
progress.

**IMPORTANT: Please check spelling journals and math workbooks periodically
to ensure your child is meeting success in these areas, as well. Some
students are not performing well in these two areas of homework.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Sherry Simmons
