Spelling Homework Help Sheet

 

Keep this to help you understand the assignments for spelling each week.  They are not all on this tic-tac-toe board this week but they will be at some point this year.  Thanks for your support and help!

 

Definitions of spelling assignments:

 Word triangles-Write the first letter of the word on one line and the first and second letters on the second line.

 Antonym or Synonym- This will vary each week- it may be a synonym or an antonym- You may use a thesaurus for this!

Remember- Antonym is different meaning

                 Synonym is the same meaning

 

 Words in your words- Write down all the words that you find in your

spelling word.

Example- unforgetable

                forget

                forge

                get

                for

                able

 Red-consonants/Blue–vowels- Write your words writing the consonants in red ink or colored pencil and the vowels in blue ink or colored pencil

 Internet link- use the link on the Tic-Tac-Toe and follow the directions on the website to practice your words.  This is a great way to make spelling fun!

 Treasure Box- Write the spelling words on slips of paper. Fold each slip and put it into a box labeled Treasure Box. Have your child take out a slip and hand it to you. Pronounce the word and have your child spell it. An incorrectly spelled word should be returned to the box. The goal is to spell all the words in the box correctly.

 Type a Word- Pronounce each word and have your child type it in.

 Rainbow Words-First write each word in pencil.  Then trace over each word three times. Each time you trace, you must use a DIFFERENT color crayon.  Trace neatly and you will see a rainbow!

 Word Magic- Choose 10 words . Write the word once, then write it a 2nd time without the first letter, then write it without the first two letters. Repeat until the whole word disappears.

      Example: SPELL, _PELL, _ _ELL, _ _ _ LL, _ _ _ _ L, _ _ _ _ _ 

 Shortest to Longest- Count the number of letters in each word. Then write the words in order from shortest to longest.

 Word Search- Use at least six of your words in a word search.  Write each of your words on a grid, placing one letter of a word in each box.  Next, hide the words by filling in the letter all around them.  Create a lost of hidden words tobe used in finding them later. I will provide the grip paper-just ask!

 Tongue Twisters- Write at least six different tongue twisters withas many spelling words as possible.
 
Example- Spelling word- play  
Please pick up plenty of pretty people to play ping pong on the porch.

 Handwriting- Print each word, then copy in cursive right next to it.

 Word Art- Create a picture using your spelling words (concrete poem).  Use all of your sords at least once in your drawing.

 Silly Sentences-Write silly sentences using a spelling word in each sentence. Please underline your spelling words! Write neatly!

Example: My dog wears a blue and purple dress when he takes a bath.

 Backwards Words- Write your spelling words forwards and then backwards. Write neatly! Example: where erehw 

 Story, Story- Write a story using ALL of your spelling words. Be sure to underline your spelling words in your paragraph.  You may type your story and email it to me if you like!     

 Squiggly Spelling Words-You are going to write your spelling words two times. First write in regular letters. Then write the words again in squiggly letters!

 Bubble Letters-Write your spelling words in bubble letters. After you write your words in bubble letters, color your words with a crayon or colored pencil.

 Three Times-Write each spelling word three times:

First, write each word in pencil.

Second write each word in crayon.

Third, write each word in marker.

You MUST write neatly!

 Acrostic Poem- Choose one of your spelling words.  Write an acrostic poem for that word.   You must also ILLUSTRATE your poem.

*Example:fly-

Fun in the sky.

Laps around clouds.

Yes! I’m free!

 Adding My Words- Each letter has a value. Write your spelling words. Then add up the value of each spelling word.

*Consonants are worth 10.

*Vowels are worth 5.

Example: said-

10 + 5 + 5 + 10 = 30

 Superman Letter- Your job is to write a creative letter to Superman (or another super hero).  In your letter, you must use each of your spelling words. Be sure to underline your words as you use them.

 Riddle Me- Write a riddle for each of your spelling words. Don’t forget to add the answers to your riddles.

*Example- I cry when I am hungry. I wear diapers. I am cute and cuddly. What am I?

*Answer- Baby

 Connect the Dots-Write ten of your spelling words in dots.  Then connect the dots by tracing over them with a colored pencil.
 Code Words-Come up with a code for each letter of the alphabet. Write down your code.

*Example: a=  b=  c=

Then write your spelling words in code.  You must write the actual spelling word

next to the “code word.”
 Fancy Words- Write each of your spelling words using fancy letters.  Your letters can have curly-q’s or dots,for example. Have fun!
 
 Upper and Lower- Write your spelling words two times each.  First, write each word in UPPERCASE letters. Second, write each word in lowercase letters.
