Schuyler Central High School is in Need of Improvement
Schuyler Central High School has not met Adequate Yearly Progress in reading for two years in a row. This means that not enough students have been proficient on the reading standards tests for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.
A school improvement team consisting of administrators, teachers, outside consultants, a school board member and a student has been working to produce an action plan that will lead the high school into reaching the required proficiency levels. Currently, high school language arts and reading teachers have been meeting to collaboratively create lesson plans that specifically target the standards in order to ensure that students have had the opportunity to learn the tested material. These teachers will also meet through the spring and summer to ensure that the high school's language arts and reading curriculum and instruction are appropriately aligned to the state standards.
The improvement plans will not stop with the work of these teachers, however. The entire staff will be engaged in activities to learn to work collaboratively in professional learning communities. Staff members will work together in teams to improve student learning within their own courses and to help students meet proficiency levels through all curricular areas.
Schuyler Central High School has been able to meet or exceed state averages in other areas such as the statewide writing assessment. The high school has also placed an emphasis on graduation rates and has seen it rise to a high of 90% with the class of 2010 while maintaining very rigorous graduation requirements. With the emphasis we are placing on the reading assessment, we are confident that we can make great improvements on it as well.
