Readiness Skills

Is your child ready for Kindergarten?  Use this checklist to help you decide.  


Colors and Shapes
•	Recognizes and names the colors (red, blue, green, orange, yellow, purple,
brown black)
•	Recognizes the shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle)

Numbers
•	Counts orally 1 to 10
•	Recognizes the numbers 1-10
•	Practices saying address and telephone number

Reading Readiness
•	Pronounces own first name
•	Pronounces own last name
•	Recites or sings the alphabet
•	Is familiar with nursery rhymes
•	Is able to sit in a chair for an extended period of time
•	Recognizes most letters

Writing Skills
•	Writes own first name
•	Traces shapes and letters
•	Attempts to write letters
•	Draws a person

Listening and Sequencing
•	Follows simple directions
•	Listens to a short story

Motor Skills
•	Buttons
•	Zips coat and pants
•	Cuts simple shapes
•	Uses glue
•	Practices tying shoes

Social Skills
•	Can be away from Mom and/or Dad
•	Plays well with other children
•	Has a 10-15 minute attention span to complete an activity
