February 13
There will be no classes for students on this Monday, February 13, due to a teacher professional development day.
Our "Read-a-thon" is now in full swing. All pledges need to be returned to school by Friday of this week. Please encourage your child to read on a nightly basis and record their minutes on the log sheet that was provided.
On Tuesday we will be completing a number of Valentine's Day activities. Students are permitted to bring a party snack for the afternoon session. Please remember no nut products are permitted in our school.
On Wednesday some members of the St. John's Ice Caps will be visiting our school! They will be doing some reading and talking about the importance of kind and respectful behaviors.
In Language Arts we are currently completing our next process writing piece. The students are writing descriptive character sketches for fictional characters that they have created. We are also completing humorous pictures to accompany our writing!
We are continuing to work on division facts and strategies this week. Last week we created and solved division word problems and continued to look at the relationship between multiplication and division. It is strongly recommended that students continue to review their multiplication/division facts on a regular basis.
In Science, we are continuing to learn and study about light. Last week we created our very own light timelines. This week we will look at items that reflect light and items that emit light.
Last week in Social Studies we continued working on our unit about Nain, Labrador. We looked closely at some similarities and differences between our way of life here in St. John's and that of people in Nain. This week we will learn all about the Northern Lights. Our next art project will be based on this topic as well.
We are continuing with our units in Health and French on healthy eating and physical fitness. This week we will be completing our exercise routines and menus that elementary school kids could follow. In French we will look at some snack recipes from different places in the world.
We are continuing with our unit on Friendship in Religion. This week we will be learning about A Christian Festival of Light called Candlemas.
