KINDERGARTEN

It's so hard to believe kindergarten is coming to an end already.  June will be filled with many fun activities including field day and kindergarten recognition day.  Our academic skills have really come a long way this year and I am very proud of everyone for their hard work.  Thank you for all your support at home throughout the year.

GRADE 1

Happy June!  We cannot believe that the school year is coming to a close.  The 1st grade students have worked very hard this year on their reading, writing and math.  Over the summer continue to read at least 10 minutes a day and practice math facts often.  it is the best way to keep skills learned this year strong.  We hope you all have a safe and fun summer.

GRADE 2

Second graders are practicing independence in preparation for third grade.  They are being given more responsibilities in the classroom and being encouraged to do things for themselves as we near the end of the school year.  June is a very busy month with all the end of the year activities.  Students should continue practicing math facts and reading as much as possible for the summer to keep their brains in shape!  Good luck in third grade!

GRADE 3

Thank you for all parents who chaperoned during our field trip to Squam Lake.  We have appreciated your support throughout this school year.  Please continue to encourage your child to read during the summer.  Check with the school office for summer hours at our AES Library.  We have enjoyed working with all our third graders.  A happy, safe summer to each of you.

GRADE 5

It is that time of year again, but we still have lots to teach and students have lots to learn.  Homework is being assigned Monday thru Thursday nights.  Independent reading and IXL minutes are an expectation.  This can help improve the student abilities.  As a matter of fact, we are hoping students will read and do IXL over the summer months.  There is a scheduled "step up" evening planned for parents to attend and learn about what will be happening next school year for the sixth grade.  The date is June 11th, a Thursday evening.  You will be getting a notice about the time.  Please plan to attend the event which will be held at ARD.

ART

The first grade has just completed their bug unit.  They made ladybugs w/moveable wings, created their own bugs with plastic bug bodies, pipe cleaners and coffee filter wings.  They finished the unit with a watercolor painting of an imaginary bug.  2nd grade completed the pond unit.  They have created turtles using oil pastels, watercolors, crayons and cut paper.  A fish will be created by using pring making techniques.  The third graders are finished their geometric flowerpots and will  be working in their sketchbooks.  4th grade has been working on drawing pictures for the art contest for the 250th Anniversary Celebration of Pembroker.  They had to research their topic on the computer first before drawing.  The fifth grade has just completed a weaving project made on cardboard looms.  They are very beautiful.  They will be on display during the Traveling Art Show which will be at AES on June 1-5.  They had to research their topic on the computer first before drawing.

MUSIC

Kindergarten and first graders are learning a "backward" song - The Green Grass Grew all Around - and will soon be reviewing every song and activity they've covered this year.  Second graders are learning The Garden Song and third graders Mission Control.  Fourth graders are finishing a unit on parodies by writing a song about their classroom teachers.  Fifth graders are finishing their unit on the Beatles by doing individual presentations - dioramas, reports, students designed tests, etc.  Congratulations to the students involved in our after school musical, School House Rock, Live:  Madison Johnson, Rachel Stottlar, Liah Perdikes, Hannah Polsin, Amanda Kimionakis, Raquel Dubois, Crysta Caporale, Isaac Abbott and Dakota Martin.  Have a great summer, everyone.  See you at the end of August.

NURSE

As the year come to a close in preparation for next year a new medication form must be filled out by  your child's physician for the 2009-10 school year.  A new form will be sent home with your child.  Please remember to stop by the nurses office on June 19th to pick up medication.  to prevent one's chance of possibly developing skin cancer later in life experts believe that sunscreen with SPF & UVA protection of 30 or greater should  be applied and reapplied during outdoor activities.  Parents should also encourage children to wear sunglasses and hats to protect faces from sun exposure.  if at all possible avoid the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

O.T.

Children need time and practice to establish basic skills needed for a foundation for fine motor development.  Development of a firm hand dominance and laterality and precursors for many higher level fine and visual motor skills.

READING

We are working hard to wrap up the year.  We have been doing Aims Web Reading tests to see how the students have progressed over the school year.  We are very proud of the reading that your children are doing.  Parents of Title 1 students be on the look out for an invitation to our End of the Year Title 1 Recognition Party.  Keep reading with your children over the summer
