How can I best support my child as he/she makes the transition to first grade?
The beginning of the first grade year provides challenges as your child will
need to adjust to a longer school day with more responsibility. Children
generally require extra sleep and a more moderate activity level at home as
they become accustomed to their new schedule. Often children need to be
reassured that they will do well in their new learning environment and that
you are confident in their ability to learn. Familiar routines also provide
comfort during this time.

What is the best way to support my child with his/her reading development?
The most important thing for you to do at home is to make reading an
important part of the day. Read the books sent home every day. Even if the
children can not "read" on their own- set aside a reading time each day for
them to look through books, creating a story from the pictures they see.
As they learn more and more words, they can start to pick out familiar words
from the stories. Eventually they will be able to read some stories
completely on their own. They should be encouraged to read to as many people
as possible!!

What is the bst way to support my child with his/her math lessons?
Take a look at the math homework that is sent home each night, These sheets
provide GREAT information about what skills we are working on each day. At
first, most of the kids are going to need help completing these assignments.
Do this by reading the questions to them and asking them to explain to you
how to find the answers-don't simply tell them what to do. As they are
explaining what they know, you will be able to notice what might be difficult
for them. It is important to reinforce this at home and also let me know by
making a note on the assignment.
