About Our Day

This week in school...

11/17

Today we learned two new sound/spellings.  We learned about the nk and ng sounds that are heard at the end of words or syllables.  The nk sound is found at the end of words such as "skunk, sank, wink."  The ng sound is found at the end of words such as "wing, sang, hung, song."  These two sounds are similiar and sometimes hard to differentiate in words.  We practiced reading and writing sentences that contained these types of words.  During our whole group reading and responding time, we continued our theme "I am Responsible" by reading a poem titled "When I get up in the morning."  We practiced reading this poem with the appropriate rythym in our voices.  During workshop, we read two stories about the character Big Bing.  We then found ng and nk words in these stories.  Our other "must do" today was to practiced our word bank words.  After lunch and recess we had our language/writing lesson.  Today we learned about another type of sentence: the asking sentence (the "fancy" name we call it is an interrogative sentence).  We had fun generating questions we would ask to Barak Obama if he walked into our classroom.  We came up with many different questions, from "Why do you want to be the president?" to "What is your favorite tv show?"  We then broke into groups and wrote some other question sentences for what we might ask if other famous people walked into our room.  These were quite amusing!  In math today we used a balance to measure objects in our room with pennies.  Tomorrow we will have more time to explore using the balance to measure.  There are two stories to read tonight and two math papers to complete.  Please make sure to let me know if anyone is having trouble getting the homework done in a reasonable amount of time.  :)

11/18

Today was the day to learn about the qu_ spelling.  We learned that this spelling makes a /kw/ sound, as in the words quilt, quack, and question.  We read a story called "Quick Quin" and found many words that contained a qu_ spelling.  During our language lesson we continued to practice writing interrogative (asking sentences) and did some work in our workbook.  We also generated more questions for people we would like to meet and talk to.  Today we wrote questions for people like Elvis Presley, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Cheetah Girls, and Hannah Montana.  In math, we made another bar graph.  Today our graph was called "Dot Cube Graph" and we practiced counting on with dot cubes to get the information for the graph.  One math paper and one story came home tonight for homework.
