What if my student hasn't played an instrument, but wants to do so now?
Students of all abilities are encouraged to participate in band
at Greenland
Central School. Beginning/catch-up lessons may be arranged with
the band
director or through a local provider of music lessons through
local music
schools or instructors. Please call or e-mail Mr. Young for
suggestions.
Will the Junior High band (now known as the Middle-Level Band) be going on any trips this year?
We will be taking the Middle-Level (Gr. 5-8) Band on a trip to
Canobie Lake Park for our fourth appearance in the Great East
Festival in the Parks program on Friday, May 21st, 2010. We are
doing all on our own this year. Parental support and
fundraising will be required. Please contact Mr. Young if
interested in helping.
Will the GCS bands be participating in the Sharing Festival this year?
Yes. We will definitely take the fourth grade band. I'm
considering also taking the grade 5-6 members of the Middle
Level Band.
Why do the students need to wear white over black for the concert?
White over black is a uniformly accepted dress style for concert
bands
throughout the country. Exceptions may be made for those
students not
possessing this combination of clothing. Try to be as close to
this as
possible for the winter concert. The Middle-Level Band will
also wear the Green Bow Ties and Black Vests. Our dress
requirement for the the spring concert is more relaxed. We may
have a special shirt designed for the Festival in the Parks
trip. More to follow.
Is there a Music Boosters group at GCS?
Our Music Booster group has been meeting to support band
activities. Needs
exist for helping out at musical performance events,
concerts/festivals,
potentially supporting (via scholarships)students who may want
to attend music
summer camps, chaperoning events, decorating at concerts, and in
other ways as
well. Past years' Music Boosters helped our GCS band program
immensely. Special thanks also to the Greenland Parents
Organization for
helping us purchase t-shirts last year.
What about grading for the Junior High Band (now Middle-Level Band)?
Yes, we will grade Middle-Level Band students in Grades 5-8,
this year. The grading grid is
very simple and should not be perceived as a threat to any of our
students as long as they participate in a positive manner, come
to class on time and
prepared to work, perform in all events where they are able and
available, and
complete
any minor classroom/homework assignments on time and within the
spirit of the assignment.
