Civics Elections HW

Your homework, as introduced in class, is to complete a mini-research project over the weekend - due on THURSDAY. Since we are having a mock presidential election and campaign in class, I want you to learn about a presidential election from our nation's history.

You have all been assigned a specific presidential election. Using the web sites listed below as a partial resource, I want you to write a newspaper article that describes your particular election. This article should be written from the perspective of "the day after," with full knowledge of the results of the election. Your article should be rather thorough (at least 1.5-2 pages in length) and include the following details. Pictures are good, but not necessary.

  • Who ran in the election - all candidates from all parties
  • Popular and electoral vote totals
  • Voting trends - what regions of the country voted for which candidate
  • Percentage of the electorate that voted
  • Some historical background of the election
  • What happened during the campaign
  • Any major issues that were part of the campaign
  • Any of the candidates' campaign slogans

You are welcome to include any other information that you may find. The following sites do provide a lot of information, but not all of the details that you need to report the whole story to me. One suggestion would be to type "Election of ____" into a search engine such as About.com or Ask.com or even the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.org and see what types of results you get there for the other details. Good luck and email me any questions/problems ASAP so I can help you at the earliest possible stage. THERE IS TO BE ABSOLUTELY NO PLAGIARISM ON ANY PART OF THIS ASSIGNMENT. All sources should be acknowledged.
