Spelling words will begin the week of 9-10-12. The First Grade words
are reviewed before starting the Second Grade words. Spelling Words will
come home every Monday. Spelling words may be requested on Friday if your
child wants/needs to study them over the weekend or the words are available
on the "Spelling Words" page of this website. Spelling words will be
practiced in the classroom and as homework each evening. The Practice Test
will be given Thursday morning followed by some dictation sentences. The
Practice Test is corrected Thursday and students will bring them home in
their Homework Binders so they can study the words that are challenging them
for the Spelling Test on Friday. Even if they receive a 100% on Thursday,
please remind them to review them one last time Thursday night. Sometimes
students get a 100% on the Thursday Practice Test but then make errors on The
Spelling Test on Friday because they did not review their words.
I realize these words are very easy for some students. Please be
reassured that while they are reviewing these words, students are learning
new homework/classroom procedures, reviewing spelling/phonics rules, learning
penmanship expectations, while learning to take risks in their new learning
environment. Each student proceeds with a solid foundation of base words
while learning about their new teacher's teaching style and expectations.
Good scores and success motivate students as they begin their Second Grade
experience.
