September 2, 2011

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is ready to start
4th grade! We are looking forward to a fun and successful year.
In fourth grade we will continue to improve reading, writing and math skills,
while using these skills to expand knowledge in other content areas such as
literature, science, and social studies.

Required Supplies:
 Pencils
 Backpack
Dry board eraser, or a clean sock, to be used as an eraser on a dry
erase board (used, but clean ok)
Suggested Supplies:
 Hand held pencil sharpener
Pencil/supply bag (not too large, desk space is limited)
 Scissors
 Glue stick
 12 pack of colored pencils

Disinfecting wipes, boxes of tissues and extra pencils are a welcome donation
throughout the school year.

Homework:
This year Northwest will be implementing a school-wide homework procedure.
All homework and notices will be sent home on Thursdays. The homework sent
will be for the following week. Reading, spelling, and science or social
studies homework will all be due by the following Wednesday. Only math
homework will be due on a daily basis. Students will be given a 3-ring binder
with a folder for transporting notices and math homework, a spiral notebook
for writing reading responses, and a section with a monthly calendar and lined
pages for communication between parents and teacher. There will also be a
weekly assignment sheet. It is each student's responsibility to write his or
her behavior color, and any notes in the communication section, show it to a
parent and get it signed, and bring it back to school EVERY DAY. Daily
behavior will be recorded in this book using the following behavior color
code:
Green = great behavior today.
Yellow = warning needed to correct behavior.
Red = behavior inappropriate after warning.
If a student earns a red, a "Think Slip" will need to be completed by the
student and signed by a parent forhomework. On a Think Slip paper a student
will explain in writing the actionthey chose that was inappropriate, and what
they should have chosen as a better action or behavior.
I will check this book every morning to see if math homework is completed and
behavior code is initialed by a parent.

Lunch:
The fourth grade lunch time is at 11:35. Please be sure your child eats
breakfast and has a quick snack for morning working snack time. Read about
the breakfast program in the Northwest handbook. Breakfast price is $1.10,
$0.30 if reduced status.
Lunch money is collected daily, weekly or monthly, your choice. We now have
lunch cards so your child has an account. If you pay for full or reduced
lunch, and send in a check for $50.00, your child's account will be credited
$55.00. The cost of lunch is $1.80 a day/ $.40/day for reduced lunch. If you
received free or reduced lunch last year you will continue to do so until
Sept. 30th. A new application for free/reduced lunch status is included in
this homework folder. Please complete this form by Sept. 30th.
Ice Cream will be available for purchase for $.50.
