What should my child bring to school?

Your child should bring a pencil box and two laminated pocket folders that
are labeled with their name. The pencil box and one folder will be kept in
school, and the other pocket folder will be used as a home/school folder.
Corrected papers and homework assignments will be sent home in this folder
everyday, and notes for the teacher and homework assignments should be
returned to school everyday in this folder.

Is there snack time every day?

Yes. We have about 10 to 15 minutes for snack every day. Children should
bring in a healthy snack, such as fruit, vegetables, crackers and cheese,
yogurt, etc. They should also bring in a water or juice box. This year is a peanut free classroom, so no peanut products should be brought.

Is there Show and Tell?

During our morning meeting there are times to sign up for sharing.
It can be a tell share or something brought in to share. This is a
great way for children to share their interests.

What will my child learn in second grade?

Children continue building their reading skills, which is why it is so
important for each child to read every single night as part of their
routine. In first grade children are introduced to reading, writing, math
and problem-solving skills, and in second grade we begin to practice and
master these skills. In essence, their academic foundation is being
strengthened and their skills become more advanced in second grade.

How can I help my child succeed in school?

You can help your child by making sure all notices are read, homework is done
and returned on time, and making sure if you have any questions or concerns
that you contact me right away so we can address them immediately. Also a
good night sleep and good breakfast will help them be more alert during the
school day.

Can I help out in the classroom?

At Open House in September, I always put up a sign-up sheet for helpers. I
need a room mother who will be responsible to contacting parents at party
time, and I have centers on Friday that require help.

What is your behavior policy?

The school wide behavior rules are the I Care Rules.
1. We listen to each other.
2. Hands are for helping, not hurting.
3. We use I Care language.
4. We care about each other's feelings.
5. We are responsible for what we say and do.

These are the school-wide rules; and our classroom rules that the children helped create for this year are:
Move safely inthe classroom and through the school
Care about each others feelings
Share
Listen
Raise your hand
Work carefully and do your best

My behavior policy is based on the Responsive Classroom Model.
After deciding what our hopes and dreams for second grade will
be, we come up with rules that will help us realize these dreams.
If a child is not following the rule, I give a warning. If the
child doesn't heed the warning, I ask that child to take a break.
The child will go to a quiet area of the room until they are
ready to come back. Three breaks in one day and I do call home.
This doesn't happen too often; usually the children to respond
positively to their break time and return to our classroom
activities ready to learn and follow our classroom rules.
