Welcome to ESOL at Pelham Memorial School!

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. The program services English Learners (EL).

  EL students can be:
* recent immigrants or refugees who don't speak or understand any English at all.
* less recent immigrants or refugees who know a little of the language
* born in the U.S. of immigrant parents who speak only the language of their heritage at home
* children of families who have been in this country for generations but still maintain their heritage language at home
* adopted from another country by a U.S. family

The ESOL program strives to help these students improve their English language skills and acclimate to the American culture so that they will experience success inside and outside the classroom!

Students have their ESOL sessions during their study hall periods. During the ESOL session students have the opportunity to do their homework, catch up on classwork and/or projects for their content classes and improve their reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in school.
