Music Curriculum

I. First Broad Goal – Students should be able to understand and integrate the basic elements of 
reading and notating music. 

K-2 Grade Objectives: By the end of 2nd grade students should be able to;
 
A.  Demonstrate a steady beat by patting, moving, singing, and playing on various general music 
instruments. 
B.  Read and perform whole, half, doted half, quarter, and eighth note rhythmic patterns using “Ta’s” 
and “Ti Ti’s” and their related silent beats.    
C.   Identify (on the musical score) and use, symbols that notate dynamics, meter, pitch and form. 
D.   Have a beginning understanding about different kinds of music: Classical, Popular, and World 
Music.
E.    Name the different instrument families and identify instruments in each. 
F.    Sing on pitch using correct technique, posture, vocal expression, and etiquette. 

Grades 3-8 Objectives: By the end of 8th grade students should be able to; 
A.	  Determine and identify 2/4, 3/4, 2/2, 4/4, 6/8, 3/8 and cut time meters through reading and 
listening.
B.	 Read and perform, with the correct counting, whole, half, doted half, quarter, dotted quarter, 
eighth, dotted eighth, sixteenth notes, and triplet rhythmic patterns and their related rests.   
C.	   Identity, defines, and demonstrates symbols, which notate dynamics, meter, rhythm and pitch, 
from the music score or through direction. 
D.	  (Grades 7/8) record, copy, transpose, compose, and edit their own musical expression, or that 
of others. 




II. Second Broad Goal – Students should be able to understand and integrate the basic elements of 
performing vocal and instrumental music.      

K-2 Grade Objectives: By the end of 2nd grade students should be able to; 
A.   Sing on pitch using correct technique, posture, vocal expression, and etiquette.
B.    Sing or play in groups, partner songs, two part songs, and rounds blending 
vocally/instrumentally with expression while responding to the director.     
C.   Sing or play notated dynamics with correct meter, pitch or rhythm, and form. 
D.   Sing or play from memory a variety of songs form several genres, styles, and cultures of easy to 
medium difficulty.       

Grades 3-5 Objectives: By the end of 5th grade students should be able to; 
A.	 Sing on pitch using correct technique, posture, vocal expression, and etiquette.
B.	 Sing or play notated dynamics with correct meter, pitch or rhythm, and form while blending with 
one another.
C.	   Sing or play with confidence music that has more than two parts in small or large ensembles 
using expression and cues from the director.   
D.	 Sing or play from memory a variety of songs form several genres, styles, and cultures at medium 
difficulty.

Grades 6-8 Objectives: By the end of 8th grade students should be able to; 
A.	  Identify different elements of performance in multicultural and western music settings.       
B.	  Identify different genres of music by the different qualities of that genres unique vocal and 
instrumental sound
C.	   Sing or play notated dynamics with correct meter, pitch or rhythm, and form while blending 
with one another.  
D.	   (Grades 7/8) record, copy, transpose, compose, and edit their own musical expression, or that 
of others.    




III. Third Broad Goal – Students should be able to evaluate musical experiences through listening and 
analysis.  

K-2 Grade Objectives: By the end of 2nd grade students should be able to; 
A.   Identify a sample of instrument sounds (pitched and non-pitched) from the four basic instrument 
families, the difference between male, female, and children’s voices.    
B    Use age appropriate music vocabulary while describing aural and written musical examples; from 
our culture and from other cultures.   
C.   Identify simple musical forms and phrases presented aurally and written.   

Grades 3-5 Objectives: By the end of 5th grade students should be able to; 
A.	   Identify a variety of instruments from the four basic instrument families, human voices, and 
musical styles from aural examples.     
B.	   Identify different changes in instrumental and aural music using appropriate musical language.  
C.	   Identify specific musical examples, forms, phrases, meter, rhythm, and intervals presented 
aurally and instrumentally.    

Grades 6-8 Objectives: By the end of 8th grade students should be able to; 
A.	   Identify a variety of instruments from the four basic instrument families, human voices, and 
musical styles from aural and instrumental examples, along with different multicultural instruments 
and vocal styles.  
B.	 Identify different changes in instrumental and aural music using appropriate musical language.
C.	 Identify specific musical examples from western and world cultures: forms, phrases, meter, and 
rhythm presented aurally and instrumentally.



IV. Fourth Broad Goal – Students should be able to improvise and compose music when given 
instruction.   

K-3 Grade Objectives: By the end of 3rd grade students should be able to; 
A.   Use a variety of sounds  (instrumental, percussive vocal) when composing simple vocal and 
instrumental songs with specified guidelines.   
B    Improvises simple rhythmic and melodic phrases for specified songs.  
C.   Improvise and arrange simple musical examples to accompany readings and demonstrations. 

Grades 4-8 Objectives: By the end of 8th grade students should be able to; 
A.	  Improvise simple harmonic accompaniments and short songs with specified guidelines.   
B.	  Use appropriate music notation when composing short melodies, whether in monophonic, 
homophonic, polyphonic texture, when given specified guidelines    
C.	   Use electronic tutorials and compositional media when composing with a variety of sounds and 
sound sources under specified guidelines.  




V. Fifth Broad Goal – Students should be able to understand the role of music in our lives and its 
development of music history along with its influence on cultures from around the world.      

K-2 Grade Objectives: By the end of 2nd grade students should be able to; 
A.   Identify similarities and relationships of music to other disciplines taught in school 
B.   Explain how music affects their daily lives and know what types of music are appropriate for 
certain specified situations.  
C.   Identify simple styles in terms related to various genres from different cultures.          

Grades 3-5 Objectives: By the end of 5th grade students should be able to; 
A.	  Identify similarities and relationships of music to other disciplines taught in school
B.	  Explain how music affects their daily lives and know what types of music are appropriate for 
certain specified situations.
C.	  Describe outstanding characteristics of various musical genres, styles, and instruments from 
cultures around the world and be able to compare those with our own culture.    

Grades 6-8 Objectives: By the end of 8th grade students should be able to; 
A.	  Give specific examples of how music is related to principles of another subject taught in school.  
B.	  Describe outstanding characteristics of various musical genres, styles, and instruments from 
cultures around the world and be able to compare those with our own culture.
C.	  Identify and group into genre, style, musical and historical periods selected musical works of 
high quality, and be able to explain why these works are grouped as such.
