Homework

Homework is a significant part of a child's studies and success. It
reinforces what is being taught in the classroom, and extends classroom
learning. Because reinforcing classroom skills at
home is so important, please take the time to monitor your child's homework
assignments daily. Please also keep in mind there will also be long-term
assignments and test preparation as well.

All homework assignments will be posted daily in the classroom, and it is your
child's responsibility to copy down these assignments in their agendas.

Homework will be assigned Monday through Friday. New spelling and Word Wall
words are given on Mondays, and spelling tests and repair shop quizzes are
given on Fridays. Every Thursday night, your child should be studying for
both.

Spelling Homework:
MONDAY: Put words in Alphabetical Order.
TUESDAY: Use the Spelling words in sentences.
                    Please underline your spelling words.
WEDNESDAY: Write the words in cursive (try your best!)
THURSDAY: Study for Friday's Test

Math homework is typically assigned on a nightly basis.

Reader's and Writer's Notebooks will be worked on in school and on a nightly
basis. A schedule with be forthcoming. Please adhere to the notebook
schedule and help your child to manage their time wisely. There is no
reason why they should not be able to complete their assignments in the
given time. Readers and Writers notebook assignments MAY NOT BE MADE UP.
IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT HAND IN THEIR ASSIGNMENT ON THEIR DUE DAY, THEY WILL
RECEIVE A FAILING GRADE.

Occasionally, Social Studies homework will be assigned. When this
occurs, please be sure that all activity pages are returned to school the next
day unless indicated otherwise. For every day the activity pages are late,
10 points will be deducted.

Also, students are encouraged to read on a nightly basis. Reading logs will
come home every Friday. Students may choose a variety of reading materials,
such as chapter books (fiction and non-fiction), magazines, newspaper
articles, etc. You can monitor their comprehension by asking a variety of
questions- What is the book about? Who are the main characters? What is your
favorite/least favorite part? What did you read about tonight? Conversing
with your child about the book will help to increase his/her comprehension
level. Students are welcome to take home their independent reading books as
long as they remember to return them to school the next day.

Students are encouraged to read on a nightly basis. Reading logs will come
home every Friday. Reading logs MUST BE RETURNED ON A DAILY BASIS in order
for your child to RECEIVE CREDIT for it. READING LOGS MUST BE SIGNED BY A
PARENT ON FRIDAY TO VERIFY THE ACCURACY OF THE LOG. Once your child has
turned in an accurate log for five consecutive weeks, he or she will receive
a homework pass. Homework passes CANNOT be used in place of a READER'S or
WRITER'S Notebook assignment.
