Reader's and Writer's Notebooks

This week (November 16th) I am collecting Writer's Notebooks on your child's assigned night.  Please be sure to check the rubric once the notebook is scored and returned, as well as, the comments accompanying the score.

*Your child needs his or her Writer's Notebook in class every day! Even when your child brings his or her notebook home to write, please send it to school the following day. Please be sure to monitor your child's work at home but remember, this is a place for their thoughts and memories so please don't correct their writing.. Thank you!

Students:
You will write in your notebooks Monday through Thursday nights for 10 minutes.  You will have off every week on the day you hand your notebook in.
For example, if I hand my notebook in on Mondays, I do not have to write for 10 minutes every Monday.
Each entry should be labeled in the left margin with the DATE and HW so I know it is a homework assignment. Your Writer's Notebooks will be handed in every other week.
This will be the schedule we use:
  • Monday: RED group
  • Tuesday: YELLOW group
  • Wednesday: GREEN group
  • Thursday: BLUE group
Parents and students: PLEASE remember to look at your Writer's Notebook rubric paper. I will always write a comment on this rubric to let you know what you are doing well, and what you can work on for next time!

Reader's Notebooks are worked on in class as a way for your child to reflect on, and respond to what he or she is currently reading. Please refer to the label on your child's notebook as this determines which day their notebook is due (it is the same schedule as above). On the weeks I do not collect your child's Writer's Notebook, I will collect his or her Reader's Notebook. Responses are graded as class work because they are to be completed in class. The color on your child's notebook also reflects the day he or she "shops" for books in our classroom library. Students "shop" once a week and select a variety of books that will last them through the week.
