Each child has been assessed on their spelling strengths and weaknesses and has been placed into a cooperative learning group. Students will work in these groups each week to master various spelling skills and strategies. It is important to realize that not every student will receive the same sort.

Below you will find a list of the activities we will complete each week in school. The homework your child will have for Word Work is also listed under the appropriate day.
Monday:
Students will be introduced to their new sort for the week. Students are taught either the pattern, sound, or meaning that their sort has in common.
Tuesday:
Students will work independently to practice manipulating and sorting their words for the week.
Tuesday Homework: Students will write their helper words at the top of the paper (the words they have highlighted). Students will then sort their words using these helper words as a guide. When they have finished sorting their words they will write them in their notebooks in the appropriate column.
Wednesday:
Students will review their sorts again by completing a partner or blind sort.
Wednesday Homework: Students will write 5 words in good sentences or use the words in a short story (paragraph).
Thursday:
Students will practice locating words that contain their sort in every day literature.
Thursday Homework: Students will sort their words into the appropriate columns. Once the words are sorted students will put the words in ABC order. When each column is in alphabetical order students will write their words in their notebook.
Friday:
Quizzes are given on 10 of the weekly words.
