This week in math we continue our unit on geometry.  Monday we made tessellations using pattern blocks.  Each child created a shape that could be used in a tessellation.  We studied M. C. Escher's artwork for direction, which provided fruitful inspiration. After we completed the artwork students were expected to write about their shapes and the related transformations.  Please check them out during your upcoming conferences.  Students should continue to practice IXL regularly, current concepts are on the homework page.

Last week in math we concluded our unit on percents.  The students used real-life situations to determine final cost of items being purchased.  Each student was given an ad and corresponding coupons.  Students were asked to problem solve for final price.  Last week we also completed a "Percents in Business" project where each group was given an obstacle a small business might encounter.  Students needed to use a variety of skills to solve the problem, which included deduction, reasoning, and trial and error.  This week the sixth grade begins a 7 week unit on geometry.

January 10th
This week the students are beginning our short unit on percents, starting with a small review project using percents in real life situations.  Each student will be solving a different problem for a new business.  Next week, we will watch a Brain Pop video on percents and play Mall Math.  Mall Math is an interactive activity that helps students learn about mark-ups and discounts, which ties directly to our sixth grade math standards. We will also learn about simple interest.   We will conclude the unit next Friday with a short quiz to assess their understanding of the concept learned. Please remember to check my website often for announcements, homework, and important dates.
