5th Grade Topics of Study
Rate, Unit Rate, Central Tendency
This week in fifth grade we have been working with Unit Rate, Distance Formula, and Measures of Central Tendency. We took a portion of of week looking for the best buy for a variety of products in some old supermarket circulars and compared store to store. We also looked at a special triangle that helps with the distance formula, or as I refer to it the DIRT formula or D=RT. In looking at measures of central tendency I have challenged the students
to find the mean, median, mode and range of Super Bowl scores and attendance figures from all the way back to the first Super Bowl. Next week we will be playing some games and activities Mr. K. created such as Pick a Card, MANY Cards and DON"T BE MEAN DICE.
6th Grade Topics of Study
Geometry and Tessalations
This week in sixth grade we have been looking at shapes and figures in new and exciting ways. We made dot to dot drawings which made very complex figures. With our knowledge of basic geometric figures and area formulas, we broke complex shapes into simple
shapes and found the area of those shapes. Some of our shapes had to be broken in 30 or more triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelogram , and trapezoids. We then began our discussion of tessellation and created our own by turning a square piece of paper into a tessellation tile and designing our own tessellation.
7th Grade Topics
Interpreting Linear Equations
This week in seventh grade we have been interpreting real world examples of linear equations and putting meaning to intercepts. To further our understanding, seventh graders have been writing stories to go along with data (example - when given a slope of 2 mph and a time frame of 5 minutes - students came up with ideas such as how fast a hot air balloon rises, and how fast a river flows.) We then started to create our own stories and pass them off to each other to create a "story book" with a story for every student based on their own created data. We had some humorous, funny, and plain old strange stories, but creativity and fun was what shined through.
