Classroom Guidelines

To be successful in my class, follow some easy guidelines!

So when do I really have to get to class?
Being on time to class is VERY important.  Come right in, get your things set up, and get going on your Do Now!  If you're late, make sure you have a pass.  If you're late without a pass, you will get only ONE warning for the entire year.  After that, you will get a detention for coming in the room after the bell without a pass.  This is explained in the handbook if you have further questions.

Da fare adesso (Do Now).
In the first 5 minutes of class, we always have our "Do Now."  This activity is a warm up for the lesson and it's important that you use all of these 5 minutes for this activity.  It helps you get your mind thinking about Italian and what we will talk about that day.  Make sure you actually do the Do Now - they can be considered in part of your notebook grade and your responses to the Do Now will be important to how we start our lesson.  You should also refrain from talking with friends or in English during the Do Now.

Is participation really that important?
Yes it is!  One of the best ways for you to understand Italian is to USE it!  Raise your hand, ask questions, make relevant comments, answer questions, do the activities - basically just GET INVOLVED!  Participation is also an important part of your grade so make sure you're speaking up!  But just make sure you're speaking up in Italiano!

I have a guidance appointment!
Guidance, nurse, attendance, whatever it may be, it's important that I know ahead of time if you need to leave the room for an appointment.  When you first walk into the room, be sure to tell me about any appointments you may need to leave for during the period.  Show me the pass and I will tell you about what we will be working on, any work you may need to make up, and any homework you may have.  If a pass is not presented at the beginning of class, you will not be allowed to go.

I forgot my homework :/
Of course this will never happen but in the rare occasion that it does, this is the deal.  You have one week from the due date to make up the assignment for half credit.  Any later than a week after the due date and I will not accept the work.  If you wait a week and one day, I will not accept it - no ifs, ands, or buts.

I don't have to do it because I was absent right?

Not quite.  There's a lot to understand if you're absent so make sure that you read through this section really carefully.
  • If your absent, the first thing you should do is check out the cubbies for work you may have missed.  In those cubbies, you will find all of the materials you will need to complete make up work.  You've got to be the one to get the work you missed - I will not remind you if you are absent.
  • Here's how it works for assignment extensions - if you missed one day of school, you have one day to make it up from the day you came back.  If you missed 3 days, you have 3 days to make it up. So on and so forth...
  • If you're absent for more than 3 days, send me an email so I can give you an update about what's been happening with class and I can also forward you electronic copies of certain worksheets.
  • You should also have a "class buddy."  This would be useful for copying notes.  Also, this person could hold onto handouts for you and give you updates as well.
  • If you are absent on the day of a quiz/test/oral, you will have to complete the assessment after school the day that you come back.  You cannot complete the assessment during a lesson.  If you are absent for a test or a quiz that was announced before you were absent, you will still be required to take the test on the regular test day.  You will also be responsible for telling me when you are coming to make up a test - I will not remind you.  If you fail to make up a quiz/test/oral within these time restrictions, you will not be allowed to make up the assessment.
  • During group presentations of projects, if a group member is absent, your group will still present.  Everyone in the group is responsible for knowing all of the info in the presentation so they can cover everything.
SUBSTITUTE!!!
In the rare case that I am absent, you will have a substitute teacher.  It's really important to me that you guys help this person out as much as possible.  Be cooperative, show this person where things are, help them with attendance, etc.  I used to be a substitute teacher and it was always really awesome when I had a really cooperative class - it definitely made my day.  And make sure you do the work that is left for you.  I don't give busy work - all the work I give is important to you learning the language so make sure you do it!
