Study The First Hundred Instant Words for an assessment on Friday, October 17.

Scholastic Book Orders are due by Friday, October 17!!!

Reading:

The class is excited to begin reading Sign of the Beaver! This novel, by Elizabeth George Speare, incorporates many features of good writing and high interest. The main characters, Matt and Attean, develop a unique friendship as the story unfolds during a Maine summer in 1768. Ask your child to give you details about what is happening as we continue to read each day in school.

Your child should continue to have a book of their choice to read for school each day, too!

Writing:

We are beginning to practice using a variety of writing styles...

Our next writing project will be a Feature Story about an animal. Next week, we will begin gathering resources... Make this a chance for your child to learn about an animal they like, but do not know much about! A good place to find a nonfiction book about your animal would be the Washington Township Library. Start thinking!

The students will work on perfecting their feature story by brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, conferencing, and creating a final product. Our final project will be an illustrated book created by each child!

Spelling:

Remember to practice your words sorts at home. Your child has a copy of his or her sorts at school to study, also. One of the most important ways to work with the word sort is to recognize the patterns or rules that are within that sort. Discuss what rules you notice and work on applying those rules when spelling those words, and similar words.

Study The First Hundred Instant Words!

Social Studies:

We have begun exploring information in our New Jersey Adventure book which has taken us on a journey back to the time of the Lenape Indians...

The students have begun gathering information about the Lenape Tribe. They will be working in groups to create a "Deerskin" display of a specific tradition or custom. You may want to talk about how life is different now, then it was back in the times when the Lenape were living in New Jersey!
