Friday Notes from Nadine Noonan

September 26, 2008

Well, many of you have been busy studying for science or social studies tests this week.  Please make sure your child is using the agenda to keep you posted.  There is nothing worse than trying to cram a whole test’s worth of information in one evening.  Usually the teachers provide ample study time, hints or study guides, and make every effort to make sure your child is preparing.  That said, we know a child’s mind will play tricks, and they do not judge their time well.  So, help them plan, show them how to break it up, how to study a bit and leave it to sit in their brains, and how to prepare for a test.  These are the years to develop the pattern; the future will hold much more content and difficulty.

I am finishing assessments this week.  There are a few DRA assessments to complete.  Don’t worry, there’s no studying involved.

I continue to encourage the reading at home.  I know it’s a struggle, but it is worth it.  Don’t pick material that is too hard, it makes for fights and resistance.  Do model and support your child’s efforts with monitoring the time, and giving the task value.

In my math classes, the unit one tests are done, and we are off into unit two.  I suggest that math facts continue to be practiced. At this point, work on the unknown facts.  Don’t keep doing the familiar 2 X 2, but branch into the 8s and 6s multiplications.

Enjoy the rainy weekend, and curl up with a good book!
Warmly,

 Nadine Noonan
