    Making Magic in Room 8

Weekly Update: February 13th-February 16th

In Readers Workshop we will be identifying how a character changes and providing examples for changes. We will also be connecting with characters and discussing how we are similar to the character. ** We will be starting a new reading log where students are asked to write about an active reading strategy they used while they were reading. Students are asked to write for 4 nights but continue to read 10 minutes everyday. Thank you for helping create strong readers! **

In Writers Workshop we will be emphasizing important words/feelings by underlining or capitalizing words or phrases. We will also be revisiting the craft of dashes and revising for a strong hook.

This week in Math we will be discussing doubling and halving numbers, measuring lengths to the nearest in. and cm., creating a frequency table, line plot, and bar graph based on data collected, and finding the median of a data set. We will also be celebrating the 100th day of school on February 14th.... time sure is flying by!!

This week in Science we will be pouring liquids into various containers and noticing the water level. We will also be starting a new investigation on small solid materials like grains, pieces, and particles. We will be noticing how small solids behave in various settings.

During Social Studies we will be starting our new unit on geography and our Earth. This week we will be discussing what geography is and we will be learning the 7 continents and 4 major oceans.

In Health we will be discussing fire safety.

Reminders:

- Valentine's Day party - Tues., Feb 14th - if your child plans on handing out v-day cards please be sure that there is a card for each child.

- Please send conference forms back ASAP

- Please return report card envelopes ASAP

- Please check and initial your childs homework book daily

- Independent reading books should be brought to school everyday

- Students should read for a minimum of 10 minutes every day * Check out the new updated reading logs. Please write about an active reading strategy that was used while reading for 4 nights!

- Students should also be practicing their addition/subtraction facts for a minimum of 3 days a week for 5 minutes

- Reading logs and Fact Fluency logs are due on Mondays
